My Twist on a Tequila Sunrise

Let’s talk about TEQUILA, one of my favorite spirits. Tequila is a spirit that is distilled from the blue agave plant. Common brands are Patrón, Jose Cuervo, Casamigos, and Don Julio 1942. Tequila is typically used on the rocks with a squeeze of lime, in a margarita, bloodymary, and tequila sunrise. I am going to share with you my personal recipe for a tequila sunrise, including a healthier option as well.

The first ingredient you need is obviously tequila, but in my recipe instead of using silver, I use GOLD tequila. This is the most important part of the recipe. Gold tequila is slightly less harsh than silver and has a nice smooth and sweet taste.

  • Depending on your preference, add 1-1.5 oz (Gold Jose Cuervo is my favorite).

  • Next, in the original version, you add orange juice and float grenadine. Basically, this means after you pour your tequila, fill the cup almost to the top with OJ and leave about 2 inches. Then “float” (is a very small portion of) grenadine 1 inch to the top.

This drink is NOT mixed but stirred. Typically, you garnish with a cherry and orange, but I found that garnishing with a lemon helps to minimize the “too sweet” taste.

And that is your basic tequila sunrise recipe!

Now, for the healthier version, if you are looking to cut carbs or calories this is the option for you.

I will say this combination of ingredients I’m about to tell you may seem weird, but trust me it works.

The only thing that is going to change is instead of using grenadine, I use sugar free fruit punch. So instead of filling the cup with a majority of OJ, it will be split between OJ and fruit punch. This drink is also stirred NOT mixed. Garnish with lemon and you are all set. In this version, the only carbs and sugar you are intaking are from the OJ, but because we minimize the amount of OJ being used, it is a very small amount.
