The Veggie of the Sea – Sea Moss

Sea Moss has become one of the best alkaline foods or “superfoods” that we can add into our diet. So, what exactly is it? Sea Moss is also known as the “veggie of the sea” or scientifically known as Chondrus crispus and is primarily harvested to serve as a health supplement. Without all those fancy words, it’s basically an edible sea plant, similar to seaweed, that has loads of medicinal benefits.

The reason sea moss is considered a healthy addition to your diet is because it is low in calories, carbs, fat and high in vitamins and minerals such as iron, magnesium, zinc, and iodine, which is good for thyroid health.

Benefits

  • Thyroid Health – sea moss is rich in iodine, which is know to increase healthy thyroid function.

  • Improves Gut Health – this sea veggie contains live bacteria and healthy fiber that keeps everything moving and flowing. It can also help with weight loss because foods rich in fiber are filling.

  • Heart Healthy – it helps lower cholesterol and improve blood sugar levels.

  • Muscle Aid and Workout Recovery – sea moss contains an amino acid called taurine, which helps relax and soothe those aching muscles.

Note, consuming too much sea moss in one sitting can have risks because it can also be high in metals.

Forms of Sea Moss

You can find sea moss in raw form or gel form and it’s even sold as a supplement or gummy.  It’s important to do research on where your sea moss is coming from because not all forms are natural. Now, which form is the best form? It’s indifferent and completely up to you on what form you want your sea moss in. I purchase sea moss gel, which is super easy to add into my smoothies, just one tablespoon a day.

To prepare a sea moss gel, simply soak raw sea moss in water overnight, then rinse and blend it with new water until smooth. Transfer it to a container with an airtight lid and store it in the refrigerator overnight to gel. There are also a lot of small businesses on Etsy who sell their own home made sea moss gel!
