My Curly Hair Routine
I have had a love hate relationship with my hair for years. I never treated it right and was that girl who would straighten it everyday in middle and high school because I didn’t know what to do with it. It was so damaged and I basically lost all my waviness curls I had. My hair is more on the wavy side, but I know with consistency, I can get it back to the gorgeous, perfect curls I had when I was younger. I made some tweaks to the products I was using and have been using a hair mask about once a week for almost two months and am already seeing results. What I’ve learned is a lot of these big name companies are adding chemicals to their products that actually causes your hair to fall out and dries your scalp. Just this year, Johnson and Johnson’s OGX hair shampoo has had multiple lawsuits claiming their products are causing hair to fall out and Tresemme. “At least one ingredient in the Products, DMDM hydantoin, is a formaldehyde donor known to slowly leach formaldehyde when coming into contact with water. Formaldehyde is a well-known human carcinogen that can cause cancer and other harmful reactions when absorbed into skin.”
I replaced my shampoo and conditioner with the brand Carol’s Daughter. Their products are made with natural ingredients and for all different kinds of hair type and texture.
I started using a leave-in conditioner as both a heat protectant (before I blow dry my hair) and before I diffuse. I only use a finger scoop when I blow dry my hair so it doesn’t become too cakey and cause my hair to look oily or greasy. Originally I was using Carol’s Daughter’s hair milk leave-in conditioner which is AMAZING, but a bit pricey so lately I’ve been using Cantu leave-in conditioner which is just as good. You can find everything at Target.
After combing the leave-in conditioner through my hair, I plop gel from the ends to the roots WITHOUT brushing through. This helps hold my curls in place while diffusing. I use two different brands of gel; DevaCurl can be on the pricier side and the bottle is not that big. Volumax will last you forever and is great for not only doing a curly hair routine, but also for slicked back buns or ponys.
After applying the gel, now it’s time to diffuse. I use it on high volume and medium heat. First, I dry my roots and then dry my curls from end to root, holding for a few seconds so the curl can solidify. I also use a microfiber towel to scrunch the hair as well. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes until my hair is nearly dry. Afterwards, I like to use a curling iron to fix and curl any pieces that didn’t curl as well and it really finishes the look off.
