My ‘After-Sun’ Skincare Routine

It’s SUMMERTIME! So of course you want to sit in the sun and get that golden tan! But, too much sun exposure to ultraviolet or UV rays can lead to dry, damaged skin, and wrinkles overtime. When the UV rays reach your inner skin layers, this is what we call ‘sunburn’ and if not treated properly, the damaged skin cells will begin to peel. It is extremely important to hydrate your skin with the proper products during these hot summer months. These are some of my favorite products to use after spending a day in the sun:

  • Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water: The first product I use on my skin after a day in the sun is this cleansing water with vitamin C. It helps clean the skin first of any makeup or dirt and the vitamin C helps reduce the reaction from the sunburn. It also protects the skin from further sun damage.

Available in Ulta or Target!

  • Aloe Vera Gel: this has many benefits for your skin. According to esthetician Kim Chang, “it contains antioxidants, enzymes, Vitamins A and C, and it is highly anti-inflammatory. It can help treat burns, acne and dry skin.” Aloe vera gel works great with sunburn because it counteracts the redness caused by inflammation and helps to reduce the pain. The gel also helps “stimulate the production of collagen, which helps the healing process by improving skin firmness, dryness, and elasticity.”

    • Tip: if you plan on spending a day at the beach or the pool, put your aloe in the fridge beforehand. This will help sooth the skin immediately from sunburn.

Available in almost any supermarket or pharmacy!

  • Aloe Vera Spray: This is a lifesave for when I have a sunburned scalp. For awhile, I would try to apply my aloe and other products throughout my scalp and it was always so messy. I apply this every 2-3 hours and yes, it can also be used for your body!

CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion: MOISTURIZE! According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is best to shower and leave your skin a little damp and then apply a moisturizer. “The moisturizer will then help trap the water into your skin.” I know this is called my “After” sun skincare routine, but this product here has been my holy grail for so long. My face is one of the areas that is most sensitive to the sun and this helps prevent burning and peeling.

  • It is also important to apply moisturizer and sunscreen on your hands and this formula contains both! You may not realize it, but our hands are in the sun more than any other part of our bodies, especially if you drive frequently. Adding this into your everyday routine will reduce wrinkles and fine lines, which will help with signs of aging.

  • Afterwards, I’ll use the regular CeraVe moisturizing lotion and mix it with a bit of aloe on the areas that are red. I’ll reapply this combination every hour or two, depending on how bad the area is.

Available in most pharmacys, makeup stores, or online at Amazon!

Available almost everywhere!

  • Aquaphor: This healing ointment is great for those small spots that are always in the sun (ie; great for a sunburnt nose). Aquaphor helps rebuild the skin barrier while also getting rid of the damaged skin cells without the peeling.
