Why You NEED Silk Pillowcases

So why silk pillowcases? First, I’ll start by asking if you ever wake up with bad bed head? How about a random breakout? And does your skin ever feel extremely dry even if you moisturized before bed? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you should keep reading.

I was introduced to silk pillowcases by a close friend of mine who told me all the benefits it has to offer. I was like “so you’re telling me that if I just change my PILLOWCASES I can see a difference in my hair and skin?” Of course there are numerous other factors that play a role in acne breakouts or split ends, but if I just change this one thing, it can help minimize the risk? Skeptical at first, but I decided to try it especially because when I style my hair curly or in braids, I always wake up with a frizz mess on top of my head. Did I still have some frizz? Yes, but it was not comparable to my previous cotton/polyester pillowcases. After doing more research, I found out that they have more benefits than just keeping your hair together. Here are the many benefits of silk pillowcases:

  1. Helps keep your skin hydrated: Because of silk’s soft, smooth texture, it helps to retain the moisture in our skin instead of sucking our skin dry like cotton or polyester. This is also important to remember as we are going into the dry-winter months.

  2. Promotes hair health: Not only does silk also help to retain the moisture in your hair, but it reduces frizziness and bed head, which overtime, can lead to split ends. “Cotton is more porous” meaning that it absorbs the moisture from your hair. It also helps with a dry, itchy scalp, which is something that I have had issues with in the past. Don’t let your pillowcase be a contributing factor.

  3. Helps prevent wrinkles: Because of silk’s smooth surface, there will be very little friction and studies show that friction from tossing and turning and sleeping on the side of our face causes creases in our skin.

  4. Helps reduce acne breakouts: We lay on our pillowcases every night and some of us may not sufficiently clean our faces before bed (I am guilty of this). So our cotton pillowcases are absorbing the oils and bacteria that are on our face and then maybe the next day you do a full skincare routine before bed, but you go and lay on your oil/bacteria absorbed pillowcase. Because of silk’s texture, it will absorb less oils and therefore, will help keep your skin clear and fresh. A study was also done that shows a reduction in pimples in people who slept on silk covers compared to cotton.

Fortunately, they are not going to break the bank and are super affordable on Amazon!
